Me? I splurge on good modest clothing. If you’re a hijabi, you know that sometimes it can be difficult to find the perfect shirt that is cute, has long sleeves, and covers your behind. So, when I find something really good like that, sometimes I just have to ignore the price tag and buy it. I also splurge on good food. We try to eat as organic as possible in my house. So when we go grocery shopping, we have to spend a few extra dollars in order to get better quality food.
What do I save on?
I save on drugstore items like toiletries and beauty products (except for when I need a MAC fix!). I usually find great deals on these items at drugstores like CVS. CVS actually helps me save even more money because it gives you Extra Bucks on your shopping receipts throughout the year. The Extra Bucks are usually worth around $5 and you have to use the money at that store. CONFESSION: When I get Extra Bucks on my receipts, I usually turn right back around and buy some more stuff before I leave the store… Pathetic right?

Every time I see my sister-in-law, Roza*, she tells me that I am “so pious for dressing modestly” even when I’m around my family. Funny, right? Well, she says this because I usually wear long skirts, pants or jeans at home and sometimes I wear scarves as well – and when I’m around mahram people other than my daughter and my husband, I usually throw on a cardigan or something over my tank tops. It’s not really about trying to be “more religious”, it’s just about being comfortable.
Inside style refers to what a hijabi Muslimah wears when she’s at home. I like to call my inside style Bohurban-Chic (bohemian+urban+chic) and here’s why I wear what I wear:
[1] long skirts because they’re comfy and cute;
[2] tank tops because I like the idea of wearing something fitted on top of flowy skirts – and of course tank tops are super-comfy;
[3] silk scarves because they keep my wet hair from getting frizzy as it air dries (they also allow me to look cute on bad hair days!);
[4] a gold name chain because I’ve wanted one ever since I was 10 years-old and inshaAllah I’ll still be wearing it when I’m 80 (!);
[5] hair sticks because they provide a cute way to pin my hair up;
[6] big gold hoops because they’re essentials and they look great when you wear your hair up;
[7] indian bangles because they’re my favorite and I love the jingling noise that they make;
[8] black eyeliner because it makes me feel a little fancy – J. Lo Live Luxe perfume has the same effect;
[9] flip flops because I usually like to have something on my feet.
Ok, so what’s your inside style? Do you dress the same way around everyone that you don’t have to be completely covered around? Or do you have different levels of modesty depending on who you’re with?

MAHRAM: A person that a Muslim woman does not have to wear hijab in front of.
I don’t know about you, but where I come from, there aren’t a ton of good Muslim men to choose from. So when I was trying to get married, I thought that the Internet would be a good way to meet someone. Now, this was before all of the eHarmony commercials were running on television. All I had were AOL and Yahoo instant messengers, and one or two Islamic marriage sites that were filled with people who were only interested in me for a green card (seriously!). But now that single Muslim women have Myspace, Facebook, and all the other social networking and matrimonial websites, it would seem that finding a husband would be much easier because there are so many places to look. But I realized that all of the single Muslim women that I know who have tried to find a husband online are either still single or they ended up meeting their husband offline.
So, tell me, do you think that the Internet makes it easier to find someone to marry? Have you tried looking for a husband online? If yes, what was your experience like? If no, why not? And what are your tips for Muslim women who are looking for a husband online?

It’s just after dawn and we’ve just finished praying, reciting Al-Qur’an, and having a mini-halaqah. One of the verses that I came across in my reading this morning is a verse in Surah Yusuf (one of my favorite stories in The Qur’an) which includes a beautiful du’a that I plan to start saying regularly inshaAllah.
In translation the du’a says: “…Oh Creator of the heavens and the earth, You alone are my savior in this world and the world to come; let me die submitting to You, and place me among the righteous.” [Ayah 12:101]
Such a perfect du’a! It’s what every Muslim wants, to be devoted to Allah and to be counted among the righteous ones in The Hereafter.

The “something silly” that I didn’t realize until I got married is that blow-drying, curling, and other time-consuming hairstyling techniques can be really pointless once you find yourself washing your hair as often as married women do (you know, “the morning after”). So, I had to figure out new ways to do my hair. More about that coming up in the first issue of Muslimette in November.
