Bismillah Ar Rahman Ar Rahim
In this quick post, you’ll find 3 things you can do right now to be happy – no matter what’s going on in your life.
Despite what some people will tell you, Muslim women are supposed to be happy. Yes, we all will go through trials and tests in our lives; but even within those “hardships” we should be able to find peace through patience. So, why are so many of us always sad, always mad, always frustrated or otherwise unhappy? Better yet, how can we snap ourselves out of that unhappy state and begin living blissfully RIGHT NOW?
Allah – our beautiful, merciful Lord – has given us the keys to happiness in Surah 13:27-29, which translates to:
“…’Allah leads whosoever He wills astray, and guides whoever turns to Him in repentance. Those who believe and find peace in their hearts from the remembrance of Allah: Surely there is peace of heart in the remembrance of Allah!’ Those who believe and do righteous deeds, have happiness, and an excellent resting place.”
So, here’s how to get happy right now…
#1 Repent. Sometimes our unhappiness is a result of something that we’ve done wrong. In those cases, a simple dua like the one that Prophet Yunus made is all you need to turn your day around. When he found himself in the belly of the whale, Prophet Yunus (alayhi salam) called out to Allah saying: “La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minadh dhalimeen”. This translates to: “There is no God but You, Glorified are You. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers.” Prophet Yunus was released from his hardship after saying this dua, and inshaAllah the same will happen for you.
#2 Go outside and dhikr. We can dhikr anywhere, right? So, why am I telling you to go outside to do it? I’m telling you to go outside to dhikr because sometimes you have to change your physical state in order to change your mental state. So rather than staring at the same boring ceiling in your house, you can go outside and look up at the gorgeous new sky Allah created today. You can feel the breeze against your skin, listen to the birds, and just take in all of the beauty that Allah has created for YOU to enjoy. While doing this, thank Allah for each thing as you notice it. You can’t be sad and upset while being happy and grateful. So, go outside, take a deep breath, smile and remember how much Allah loves you.
#3 Do something righteous. Referring back to Surah 13:29, if a believer does righteous deeds, she will be happy. The concept of righteousness can sometimes seem like a complicated thing to achieve, but it’s really quite simple. In order to be righteous, you simply have to do right by yourself, your soul, your people and your possessions. This is a moment by moment practice. So right now, who can you do something righteous for? You can smile at someone, give someone a hug, give someone a gift, cook something for someone. Just pick someone in your immediate family and go do something for them that will make them happy. And then as you go about the rest of your day, make your decisions based on the following criteria: “Is it RIGHT for me to do this?” Remember, Allah’s PROMISE to YOU is that if you do righteous deeds, you will be happy.

Mash’Allah. This is a very beautiful write-up and I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and advice. I often do #2 when I’m happy or feeling sad sometimes. When you look at nature everywhere you turn, how can you remain sad??? Thanks!
